In May 2003, she went on a long break. At the Motion/Ezekiel Surf into Summer event in Hawaii, she came out on top in both her group and the open division.
It was the same year that Bethany came second in the free women’s division of the National Scholastic Water Sports Association (NSSA) National Championships in San Clemente, California, where they were held. On October 31, 2003, Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot requiem shark as she was water skiing off Kauai’s North Shore. She was killed by the shark.
She lost her left arm below the shoulder because of the attack. Bethany started her road to recovery with an implausible positive attitude, even though she lost more than 60% of her blood and had a lot of surgery without getting an infection.
Bethany went back into the water a month after she was attacked to try to become a better surfer. She first used a custom-made board that was a little longer and a little thicker, with a handle for her right arm to make paddling more easy.
It took Bethany Hamilton three weeks to get back on a board. She had learned to surf with one arm. After she won the NSSA National Competition in 2004, she got a lot of attention and praise. These things were all very interesting. One of them was the 2004 MTV Teen Alternative Awards, where the “Wahine O Ke Kai” Award was given. During the same year, she wrote Soul Surfboarder, which was a best-seller. Second: Body and Soul was her second book. It came out in 2014.
