He was born in Durban, South Africa, but when he was just 10 years old, his family moved to New Zealand and  was fascinated by cricket from an early age and spent his school years learning the sport from former Test cricketer Chris Kuggeleijn.

Watling succeeded at Hamilton Boys’ High School where he went to school. In addition to representing England in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004, Watling and his team won the Gillette Cup twice. He scored 268 runs in six games, including half-centuries and centuries, for a world cup total that was above average.Later, Watling was selected for the Northern Districts team and given the opportunity to make his first-class debut in 2004 as a wicket-keeper. He started out as the team’s opener before switching to starting the batting.

Watling participated in his maiden Test match and made his international debut in December 2009. In the game against Pakistan, he participated and scored 18 and 60 points in the first and second innings, respectively.

After the World Test Championships final against India in 2021, Watling has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
