Harte was 21 years old and a college student when he chose to hitchhike to Alaska. He would spend the next forty years of his life in the Alaskan wilderness. Despite the fact that he was married at the time of his move to Alaska, he would have to live there alone for a few years before his wife joined him.

Trapping, construction, and hunting were among the talents mastered by the outdoorsman, which would come in handy in Alaska. He built his cottage and lived there with his dog team and family.
Harte enjoyed to perch on the “throne,” a large rock protrusion near his cabin that overlooked the river. He sat there, sipping his freshly brewed coffee or beer and admiring the scenery around him.
Bob also took part in a Russian-American trapper exchange program in the early 1990s. He was caught up in the program with Russian families who assisted in bridging the gap between the two countries.

On July 17, 2017, he was honored at a memorial service. He claimed there that he should have perished nearly 20 times. He’d crashed his motorcycle, crashed his plane three times, unintentionally shot himself, fallen off his cabin wall, and undergone brain surgery.
Harte was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and was forced to leave the show for treatment during the second season. After showing signs of improvement, he returned in 2017. However, he died on July 22 of the same year, surrounded by family and friends.
