Fans and promoter Nick Gulas, though, were quick to recognize his agility and flair. Gulas intended to move him up the NWA Mid-America ladder by putting him in matches.
In 1978, he and his team Leapin Lanny Poffo defeated Gypsy Joe and Leroy Rochester to win the NWA Mid-America Tag Team Championship. It was his first championship, which he and Poffo held for a little more than a month. Later in his career, he co-founded “The Jet Set” with Nick Gulas’s son, George Gulas.
He and Gulas were three-time tag team champions. Eaton temporarily performed for Georgia Championship Wrestling after Nick Gulas’ wrestling promotion dissolved owing to low ticket sales, where he won the National Television Championship. He quickly returned home to work for promoter Jerry Jarrett’s Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) in Memphis, Tennessee.
Also he joined the Midnight Express shortly after joining Mid-South Wrestling under promoter Bill Watts. He also created a new tag team with longtime adversary Dennis Condrey, managed by Jim Cornette.
Condrey, Randy Rose, and Norvell Austin had previously formed The Express. However, with his addition to the crew, the Midnight Express became a two-man operation. Furthermore, in 1985, he, Condrey, and Cornette joined with Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) and earned national exposure on JCP’s SuperStation TBS televised programs.
