He played football in college before suffering a career-ending injury in 1991, but his playing days there only lasted a little over a year. Throughout his career, Pry has worked with numerous teams on both the collegiate and professional levels, holding a number of coaching responsibilities.

Pry started out as a student coach for the Buffalo Bulls football team in 1992, when he first started coaching. Then he moved on to numerous additional assistant coaching jobs, working at Georgia Southern, Memphis, and Western Carolina, among others.

Pry joined the coaching staff at Louisiana-Lafayette in 2003, serving for three seasons as the linebackers coach. Before going back to Louisiana-Lafayette in 2007 as the defensive coordinator, he first spent one season as the co-defensive coordinator at Western Carolina.
