Early childhood development and education
Brigitte Gabriel was born in the Marjeyoun District of Lebanon, the first and only child of a Maronite Christian couple who had been married for over twenty years.
During the Lebanese Civil War, she claims, Islamic rebels attacked a Lebanese military base near her family’s home and destroyed it. Gabriel, who was ten years old at the time, was wounded in the assault by shrapnel. She claims she and her parents were forced to live underground for seven years in all that was left, an 8-by-10-foot (2.4 by 3.0 m) bomb shelter with only a small kerosene heater, no sanitary systems, no electricity or running water, and very little food. To avoid Muslim snipers, she claims she had to crawl in a roadside ditch to a spring for water.
In the spring of 1978, she and her parents were stuck in the shelter for two days due to a bomb blast. Three Christian militia fighters finally saved them, one of whom befriended Gabriel before being killed by a land mine.
Gabriel wrote that a stranger warned her family in 1978 that Islamic militias were planning an assault on all Christians. She claims that when the Israeli army attacked Lebanon in Operation Litani, her life was spared. Gabriel was stunned by the Israelis’ humanity when her mother was critically wounded and taken to an Israeli hospital, in comparison to the relentless propaganda against Jews she had seen as a child. She described her experience as follows:
a profession
Gabriel worked as a news anchor for Middle East Television’s World News, an Arabic-language evening news broadcast that “was then run by Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network to promote his politically conservative, Pentecostal faith in the Middle East,” under the pseudonym Nour Semaan.
Israel, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon were all covered in the broadcasts. The Israeli withdrawal from central Lebanon, the Israeli Security Zone (occupied South Lebanon), and the Palestinian revolt in the West Bank and Gaza were all covered by Gabriel. She lived in Israel until emigrating to the United States in 1989.
Gabriel said she gave a “national security briefing” at the White House in February 2017. In March 2017, she met with White House aides.
