The Mets traded Harrelson in 1978 for a minor-league infielder and around $50,000. Bud, 33, became Larry Bowa’s backup when he joined the Phillies.
After two seasons with the Phillies, Harrelson joined the Texas Rangers in 1980, and this was his final season in Major League Baseball. He took over as manager of the Mets in 1990, but was sacked early in the next season.
