Soccer player Celso Borges was born in San José, Costa Rica, on May 27, 1988. His father is former football player and coach Alexandre Guimares, who was born in Brazil and raised in Costa Rica. He was raised in the nation’s capital, San José, and went to Sistema Educativo Saint Clare High School, where he played on the team and learned everything he knows about the game from legendary Costa Rican footballer don Juan Varela. At the age of 18, Borges made his professional debut with Saprissa on January 15, 2006. He won five national championships with Saprissa. On January 18, 2009, Fredrikstad FK’s sports director Tor-Kristian Karlsen announced that Borges had signed with them and would start playing for them on July 1, 2009, when his contract with Saprissa expired. In order for Borges to join the team right away and play for Fredrikstad when the season began on April 14 against reigning league champion Stabaek, Fredrikstad later agreed to pay Deportivo Saprissa 1 million kroner (125,000 Euro). In March 2011, Borges said he will leave Fredrikstad either during or after the 2011 campaign.
On January 1, 2012, Borges signed a three-year contract with the Swedish football team AIK Stockholm after leaving Fredrikstad FK as a free agent. Martin Kayongo-number Mutumba’s 10 shirt, which he now wears, was gifted to him. On April 1, 2012, Borges took the field for AIK against Mjällby AIF. His first goal for the team came in the following game, where the team defeated Kalmar FF. During the first half of the season, he was used as a striker by manager Andreas Alm. Borges was the first of five Costa Rican players to successfully execute a penalty shot in their round of 16 victory over Greece in a 5-3 shootout. He was selected for the 23-person Costa Rican roster for the May 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
