When he was 11 months old, his two older brothers and two older sisters were placed in foster care, but when he was 14 years old, he eventually returned to live with his grandmother. He was given a scholarship to Virginia Commonwealth University for his first year, but he decided to enlist in the American Army instead. He worked as an army video cameraman from 1995 and 1999.
