Within a year of being hired, Dickens started doing freelance reporting at London’s courts. Just a few years later, he was writing for two important London newspapers. In 1833, he started sending sketches to journals and newspapers under the alias “Boz.” In 1836, he released his first book, Sketches by Boz, which contained his clippings.
In the same year, Dickens started releasing The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. His series, which started as captions for the hilarious sports-themed pictures of artist Robert Seymour, was released in monthly installments. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club attracted a large readership. Indeed, readers preferred Dickens’ captions to the illustrations they were supposed to go with. Later, he developed and published magazines including Household Words and All the Year Round.

Dickens wed Catherine Hogarth not long after Sketches by Boz, his debut work, was released. Ten children were born to the couple. Dickens lost both his father and daughter in the 1850s, which was a devastating blow. He also divorceed his wife in 1858. Dickens started an intimate relationship with a young actress named Ellen “Nelly” Ternan after openly defaming Catherine.
Whether the two started dating before or after Dickens’ divorce is unclear; it is also thought that he went to great efforts to remove any records that would have mentioned Ternan’s involvement in his life.
Death
At Gad’s Hill Place, his country residence in Kent, England, Dickens passed away on June 9, 1870, at the age of 58, following a stroke. Five years before, Dickens had been in a train accident, from which he never entirely recovered. He kept on touring right up until he passed away, despite his failing health.
Dickens was buried at Westminster Abbey’s Poet’s Corner amid a throng of thousands of mourners. Thomas Carlyle, a Scottish satirist, called Dickens’ passing “a universal event, a unique of abilities suddenly extinct.” The Mystery of Edwin Drood, his last book, was still unfinished when he passed away.
