On July 6, 2018, he was given the position of head coach of the New York Red Bulls following the departure of former manager Jesse Marsch, who joined RB Salzburg as an assistant. The Red Bulls won the Supporters’ Shield as a result of his assistance in helping them finish first in the regular season.

Atlanta United FC defeated the Red Bulls in the conference championship match. On September 4, 2020, the day following a 0-1 loss to D.C. United, Armas severed ties with the club.
