His parents went on to have two additional children, Maxime Boucher and Christel Boucher. When her mother divorced his father, though, things were difficult. Boucher, who was 16 at the time, dropped out of high school. To help support his family, he began working as a chef and dishwasher in a restaurant in St.Hubert. He was despondent about his prospects and even wondered how he had come to be that way.

Basketball as a Source of Hope

One of Boucher’s few bright spots in life was basketball. Despite the fact that he was unable to participate in organized basketball at his school, the small alleys served as his basketball court, with local kids serving as the players. Slowly, he gained the confidence and skill to join pickup games with strangers. He wanted to be a professional player, but he didn’t know where to begin. He, on the other hand, wanted to do everything he could. So he created an account on a local basketball website with two pieces of information: his name, Chris Boucher, and his height, 6 feet 8 inches.

Despite the fact that the profile contained no other information, his height stood out, and the coaches were unsure whether it was his true height or a mistake. So, Appiah and Igor Rwigema, the coaches, went to check on Chris Boucher. The coaches noticed him playing with the kids and realized they needed to assist him in pursuing his passion. Chris had never participated in organized basketball and was not a student. As a result, it appeared that this individual had no prospects.

A Golden Ticket to a More Promising Future

Rwigema and Appiah were working on a program in Alma, Quebec, that would take potential basketball players from disadvantaged backgrounds and place them in a learning environment. As a result, Alma Academy was founded to give young, brilliant people hope. It was a program for individuals like Chris who have the skill but had no other option. Boucher was offered the chance to join the program by Rwigema and Appiah. Chris, who stood to lose nothing, said yes right away, but he couldn’t leave his family behind. Chris’ mother decided to send him with the coaches since it was the only way for the Montreal native to have a better future. His father, on the other hand, was unconcerned. With this, Chris was ready to take the next step in his life.

Getting Ready to Play Basketball

Boucher found it difficult to acclimate to Alma’s system at first. It took some time for the concept of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as the stringent homework and basketball practice schedule, to settle in. Furthermore, Boucher felt homesick. He yearned for his mother and sister. But, far from home, he was forming a family who saw him as more than a failed adolescent, but as a future basketball player. James Miller, a basketball coach at New Mexico Junior College, observed him one day and was amazed by his abilities. As a result of this, he was offered a scholarship to play at New Mexico Junior College. Boucher had only recently acclimatized to life at Alma and was apprehensive about moving to New Mexico. He was, nevertheless, adamant. So he went to play basketball at New Mexico Junior College.
