How did Christian Longo become a murderer?
In terms of his professional life, Longo was wanted for the murder of his wife, Mary Jane, and their three children. Later, on December 19, 2001, divers discovered the bodies of his 4-year-old son, Zachery, and his 3-year-old daughter, Sadie. Five days later, Mary Jane and Madison, their 2-year-old daughter, were discovered.
He was last spotted in Cancn on December 27, 2001, at a hotel, after fleeing the United States. A federal arrest warrant was issued the next day in Lincoln County, Oregon, charging him with several counts of aggravated murder and illegal flight in the United States District Court for the District of Oregon.
Longo later left the hotel on January 7, 2002, and was apprehended without incident six days later in Tulum, Quintana Roo, about 80 miles south of Cancn. On January 14, 2002, he was apprehended by US authorities at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. He was also sentenced to death in 2003.
Longo admitted to being a narcissist in a message to KATU-TV, a Portland, Oregon, television station, years later. He wrote there that he finally began “studying what a psychologist told me was and came to terms with it, almost completely agreeing that he was right…his summing-up was the narcissistic personality disorder, which he called “compensatory” – primarily self-centeredness related to a disabled core sense of self.”
When he used the name Michael Finkel, a former New York Times reporter who later detailed their experiences in his memoir True Story, which was later made into a 2015 film, he was accused of plagiarism.
Longo is now awaiting execution at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Although capital punishment is permitted in that country, executions have been prohibited since 2011.
