She covered many news articles during the show before claiming “exclusive coverage” of an attempted suicide. She grabbed a handgun and shot herself behind her right ear before collapsing violently.

The immediate aftermath of Chubbuck’s suicide was chaotic and perplexing. Some viewers contacted the police, while others contacted the station to inquire whether the incident was faked. The reporter was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and later pronounced deceased.

Chubbuck had created a whole script for her program, including the shooting and instructions for how her condition would be reported after the occurrence, it was later learned.

Her script stated that her health was “critical.” Using Chubbuck’s script, a WXLT employee distributed the material to other stations.

Chubbuck was a news reporter in Hudson, Ohio, who was born on August 24, 1944. Her parents were George Fairbanks Chubbuck and Margaretha D. Chubbuck. Greg Chubbuck and Timothy Chubbuck were her two brothers.

Christine went to the Laurel School for Girls in Shaker Heights, a Cleveland suburb. She went on to study theater arts at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She then proceeded to Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, before graduating from Boston University with a degree in broadcasting in 1965.
