Later, the couple broke up, and he decided to partner with Jayne Torvill, another skater. Janet Sawbridge initially served as the pair’s instructor, but Betty Callaway took over in 1978. By 1980, Torvill and Dean had not only won the British National Dance Championship, but they also had medal hopes in other countries. He was also the team’s primary choreographer for the Torvill and Dean performance. Their free performance at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 set to Maurice Ravel’s Boléro rose to international fame.
