Early Years in Politics

Immediately following graduation from the New York State Bar examination. He ran for a seat in the New York State Assembly. To everyone’s surprise, he won the election and was able to secure a seat in the assembly. Chuck ran for Holtzman’s vacant House seat in 1981. In his first attempt, the Harvard graduate was elected to the United States House of Representatives. From that day forward, he has never lost an election.

Schumer ran for the Senate for the first time in 1998. He won the party ticket with 51% of the vote and went on to defeat three-term incumbent Al D’Amato. He served on the committee that oversaw then-President George W. Bush’s decision to try terrorists in military tribunals in the midst of Washington’s concerns. Schumer has been involved in a number of reforms and bill amendments since joining the Senate.
