Career
When he met his friend Calvin Scott, Carter started his professional music career. They performed “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How” for the Fairlane label as Clarence & Calvin to get the song released. The two joined Duke Records after I Don’t Know was released in 1962. They changed their name to the C & C Boys as a result, joined the label, and put out four singles.
The pair cut “Step by Step” at Rick Hall’s FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in 1965. It was consequently released on the Atlantic Records-owned Atco label even though it did not chart.
The pair frequently played in bars in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1966. Later, Scott was seriously hurt in a car accident. As a solo artist, Carter continued to record for the Fame label. He released “Tell Daddy” in 1967, which reached its peak position of number 35 on the Billboard R&B chart. The response album “Tell Mama,” featuring Etta James, was credited to Carter as well. At the conclusion of 1967, he eventually shifted to Atlantic Records.
