Love started her musical career in 1982 with Faith No More, but she was expelled from the group. She later started the band Pagan Babies, and in 1988, after relocating to Los Angeles, she started Hole with Caroline Rue, Lisa Roberts, and Eric Erlandson. Their 1991 first album, “Pretty on the Inside,” was one of the top 20 albums of the year according to “Spin” magazine. With a new lineup that included Kristen Pfaff and Patty Schemel, Hole created their subsequent album, “Live Through This,” which was released in 1994, one week after Cobain’s passing. Pfaff overdosed on heroin two months later, and Melissa Auf der Maur took over as the group’s new bassist.

The couple was well known for their drug use, with heroin being a favorite. After being charged with drug use in 2003, Courtney temporarily lost custody of her daughter. Following multiple stays in treatment, Love stated that she was enjoying 18 months of sobriety when she accepted an Icon Award at the NME Awards ceremony in February 2020.
