Sager began his career with KMBC-Channel 9 in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1978. During 1970, he televised Kansas City Royals spring training games as well as Kansas City Chiefs preseason games. He also oversaw CNN’s first live remote coverage from the 1980 baseball playoffs.

Sager began working full-time for CNN in 1981, co-anchoring the network’s CNN Sports Tonight broadcasts. For his achievements, he received the CableAce Award in 1985.
