Dallin Oaks was born in Provo, Utah, on August 12, 1932, to Stella (née Harris) and Lloyd E. Oaks. He is a second great-grandnephew of Martin Harris, one of the three Book of Mormon witnesses, through his mother. In honor of Utah artist Cyrus Dallin, he was given the name Dallin.
Oaks received a full-tuition National Honor Scholarship during his third year of law school at the University of Chicago and went on to hold the position of editor-in-chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. Oaks received his Juris Doctor cum laude in 1957.

After serving as a clerk, he worked as a business litigation attorney at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. Both occasions occurred right before Oaks began his internship with Justice Warren: the first time during the summer of his first year of law school, and the second time shortly thereafter.
