Dallin Oaks was born in Provo, Utah, on August 12, 1932, to Stella (née Harris) and Lloyd E. Oaks. He is a second great-grandnephew of Martin Harris, one of the three Book of Mormon witnesses, through his mother. In honor of Utah artist Cyrus Dallin, he was given the name Dallin.

Oaks received a full-tuition National Honor Scholarship during his third year of law school at the University of Chicago and went on to hold the position of editor-in-chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. Oaks received his Juris Doctor cum laude in 1957.

Oaks spent a year working for Chief Justice Earl Warren of the US Supreme Court after receiving his law degree in 1957. On January 1, 1981, Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson appointed Oaks to the Utah Supreme Court as a justice following his graduation from BYU. In October 2020, Oaks spoke at a general conference, praising civility and condemning prejudice. He firmly endorsed the phrase “Black lives matter” while cautioning against using it to advance divisive viewpoints in a devotional lecture on October 27, 2020, at BYU.
