He played basketball for Indiana under Bob Knight from 1981 until 1985. Also, he was the team captain both his junior and senior years.
He obtained a degree in communications from Indiana University (IU) Bloomington in 1985 after graduating from Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana. Dakich’s defensive play against Michael Jordan helped Indiana defeat top-ranked North Carolina in the 1984 NCAA Tournament’s East Regional Semifinal.
Dakich limited Jordan to 13 points in Indiana’s 72-68 triumph, although Jordan spent the majority of the second half on the ground because of foul trouble. In Jordan’s final collegiate game, both players eventually fouled out.
