Early Days:

Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis was born in Kensington, London, England, on April 29, 1957. Day-Lewis rose quickly in the performing profession under the tutelage of his mother, Jill Balcon (who was also an actor). Daniel is a dual British and Irish citizen because his father, Cecil Day-Lewis, was born in Ireland. In 1968, Day-Lewis was moved to Sevenoaks School in Kent, where he attended boarding school. He transferred to Bedales in Petersfield, Hampshire, after two years and a growing dislike for the institution. His sister was also a student there. Day-Lewis’ father died of pancreatic cancer in 1972.

Career:

He was only 13 years old when he made his acting debut in the film “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” (1971). Daniel Day-Lewis honed his acting skills on the stage in Shakespeare’s, Marlowe’s, and Farquer’s plays throughout his student days after learning the basics. Following that, he was admitted into the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. This proved to be an excellent approach to practice engaging with complex characters and demonstrating their psychological and physical shifts on stage.

He earned his big break in theater later that year when he took over the onstage lead in “Another Country.” In 1984, Day-Lewis became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he starred in “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
