Later on, Jay-Z sampled a segment of Brisebois’s Annie performance for his song “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem).” She joined the cast of All in the Family at the end of the 1970s.

Singing Career

In the early 1990s, Brisebois started her career as a recording artist when she sang backing vocals for rock musician Gregg Alexander’s 1992 album Intoxifornication.

This was the start of a long-term partnership with Alexander, who co-produced, co-wrote, and performed on her 1994 debut solo album, Arrive All Over You. The album was moderately successful in Europe, despite its poor commercial performance in the United States.

Because of its success, Arrive All Over You garnered favorable reviews and has a loyal fan base to this day. The album was compared positively to Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill by MacKenzie Wilson of Allmusic, who called it “an earnest and impressive effort… [that] went largely unnoticed during the reign of gangsta rap and grunge.”

She gave it a favorable evaluation. Her performance of “Gimme Little Sign” was quite successful in Europe. Brisebois became a member of Alexander’s New Radicals in 1998. The album Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, which sold millions of copies, and the hit song “You Get What You Give” were the band’s biggest hits.

Her unique feminine vocals were included on recordings like “Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough” and “Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You,” which enhanced the band’s overall sound.

Later, Alexander produced and co-wrote Portable Life, Brisebois’s second solo album, which was originally scheduled for October 26, 1999 release. Alexander went on to produce and co-write the album after the band broke up in 1999.

From 2000 to 2010

The album and the single “I’ve Had It” were distributed in promotional form, reviews were published in the media, and even a music video was recorded. However, for reasons that are still unclear, RCA Records abruptly chose to axe the release. The album wasn’t made available for digital download on iTunes or Amazon.com until September 30, 2008.

That was the day the record was finally released. Following that, Sony BMG released a compilation album titled Just Missed the Train on September 26, 2006, which featured songs from the Arrive All Over You era.

Brisebois has written and produced a great deal of songs for a variety of other musicians, including Carly Smithson, Paula Abdul, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Kylie Minogue. She wrote the songs “Unwritten” and “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield, which both made it into the top ten, and “Stamp Your Feet” by Donna Summer.

In November of 2008, she reunited with Alexander, Rick Nowels, a producer, and Rusty Anderson, a former guitarist for the New Radicals, to form The Not So Silent Majority. The band’s song “Obama Rock,” which was composed in favor of Barack Obama’s election, made significant use of her vocals.
