When David was in his second year of high school, he was named team captain.
He attended Colorado State University and played college football there. From 2009 to 2012, he was a member of the Colorado Buffaloes football team at the University of Colorado.
In January 2013, he revealed that he would be entering the 2013 NFL Draft following three seasons with the team.
