Career of David Blaine

Famous Live Stunts: In 1999, he achieved renown for his “Buried Alive” stunt, in which he was entombed for seven days in a plastic cage beneath a 3-ton water-filled tank in New York City, across from Trump Place. He didn’t eat during the act and survived on only 2-3 teaspoons of water every day. When he was underground, an estimated 75,000 people came to see him, including Harry Houdini’s niece Marie Blood. Hundreds of reporters and media crews were stationed at the site for the coffin-opening on the final day of the prank. Before a crane hoisted the water tank out, a team of construction workers scraped the gravel surrounding the 6-foot deep coffin. The BBC News said that Blaine, a 26-year-old magician, had outdone his hero, Harry Houdini, who planned a similar act but died in 1926 before he could carry it out.

Blaine attempted but failed to stand for 72 hours in a big block of ice in Times Square the following year. It was included in the television special “Frozen in Time.” Even before the ice cubes were placed around him, he was barely dressed and shivering. He was kept alive and well via a tube, and he was encased in ice for 63 hours, 52 minutes, and 15 seconds before being cut out with chainsaws. He was sent to the hospital because he was in danger of going into shock. It took him a month to get back on his feet.

Blaine did another stunt, “Vertigo,” in May 2002. He was hoisted onto a 100-foot pillar in Bryant Park, New York City, by crane. He wasn’t tethered to the pillar, but he did have two handles on either side to grab if the weather turned bad. He spent 35 hours on the pillar. When he leaped down onto a landing platform made of cardboard boxes, he sustained a moderate concussion. In the closing hours of the stunt, he reported having terrible hallucinations.

Blaine did another endurance stunt in 2003 called “Above the Below,” in which he was confined within a translucent Plexiglas container and hoisted in the air near Tower Bridge on the south bank of the River Thames in London. The box was 7 x 3 feet in size and just big enough for him to stand or lie down in. Blaine was teased viciously by onlookers, who threw eggs, golf balls, and other objects at the box in classic British fashion. A cheeseburger was flown up to the box by a remote-control helicopter as a taunt. Blaine resurfaced 44 days later, haggard and 60 pounds lighter, with signs of malnutrition, and was admitted to the hospital right after.

Blaine’s second stunt, Drowned Alive, took place on May 1, 2006, in which he was tied and submerged for seven days in an 8-foot water-filled sphere. Blaine was observed by Yale researchers after this stunt to see how the human body reacts to prolonged submersion. Blaine completed a 72-hour endurance feat in New York City in 2012 called Electrified: One Million Volts Always On. Blaine stood on a pillar surrounded by seven Tesla coils producing a one million volt electric surge, which was streamed live on YouTube.

Dessa’s birth story is interesting because there were blizzards in New York when her mother went into labor, and Blaine had to hire a snowplow to get them to the hospital. Blaine was accused of rapping former model Natasha Prince at a Chelsea home in 2017, according to reports.
