Early Life

Prowse was the son of Gladys (née Burt) and Charles Prowse, and was born in Bristol. He grew raised on the Southmead housing estate in Bristol and attended Bristol Grammar School on a scholarship. Prowse, who stood 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) tall, developed a passion for bodybuilding.

He worked as a bouncer at a dance hall, where he met his future wife, and as a worker at Henleaze Swimming Pool in his early years. He left Bristol in 1963 to work for a London weightlifting company after winning the British heavyweight weightlifting championship in 1961.

He also competed in the weightlifting event in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, representing his home nation.
