Despite failing to strike out a single batter, Dean was the 1954 All-Star Game winner. This happened at Cleveland Stadium on July 13. The American League was behind 9–8 when he entered the game against Duke Snider with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

The third baserunner, Red Schoendienst, tried to sneak home, but Stone threw him out at the plate. Thanks to Virgil Trucks’ shutout ninth inning, the A.L. then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game 11-9.

Similarly, in 1952 Dean pitched two minor league no-hitters and in 1953, while playing for the Southern Association’s Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, went 8-10 with a 3.33 ERA, to make it to the big leagues. He made his major league debut in relief against the Detroit Tigers on September 13, 1953.

He would go on to pitch in relief in 60% of his major league appearances. Dean was a part of the Houston Colt.45s expansion team in 1962.
