Dell Loy Hansen is an American businessman who owns the Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake (MLS). He also owns Utah Royal FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. Hansen also owns Wasatch Property Management, Rio Tinto Stadium, and a number of other businesses in Utah and the surrounding states.

Most recently, following an investigation into Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen over controversial comments about his team participating in national sports boycotts, his wife, Julie, defended him via text messages to 2News sports anchor David James.

She penned, “I just want you to know that Dell Loy is not racist in the least. No one is more committed to equality than this man. (In support of Black Lives Matter, he read and distributed “The New Jim Crow.” Today, all he wanted to do was apologize to the fans, employees, and vendors who worked so hard and were sorely let down. It’s very disheartening.”

The Early Years

His father was a Soil Conservation Service employee, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Dell Loy’s family moved to Cache Valley, where Hansen’s family eventually settled when he was in seventh grade.

Dell Loy earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from USU in 1982.

Hansen began building houses in college. He stated, “Until the savings and loan crisis of 1988, it seemed like a good way to make a living. In 1988, the housing market imploded. In October of that year, after working all year to lose $100,000, I declared, ‘I’m no longer a home builder.’ As a result, he decided to close the company.”

Professionalism

Hansen joined the Real Salt Lake ownership group in October 2009, where he served as a minority partner for the first three years. He took full ownership of the team in January 2013. He opened the Real Salt Lake training facility in 2018.

In addition, Hansen established Wasatch Property Management in 1988, which employs approximately 600 people. Furthermore, he owns or has a stake in nearly a dozen businesses, employing approximately 900 people in Utah, Idaho, and California.
