Early Childhood and Academic Background

Delphina Addison and Dmitri West are the parents of Delonte West. He struggled with mental health as a teenager because he grew up in poverty. He fell into a deep depression, began abusing drugs, committed self-harm, and spent time in children’s hospitals.

West enrolled at Greenbelt, Maryland’s Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Following graduation, he enrolled at Saint Joseph’s University, where he averaged 18.9 points and 6.7 assists per game while shooting 41% from three-point range as a junior.

Professionalism

West was the 24th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. He was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics along with Jeff Green and Wally Szczerbiak for Ray Allen and Glen Davis after three seasons with the Celtics. On February 21, 2008, he was traded from Seattle to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he spent the next three seasons. West signed a three-year, $12.7 million contract with the Cavaliers on September 12, 2008. On March 2, 2009, he set a career high with eight steals in a game against the Miami Heat. The Cavaliers traded West to the Minnesota Timberwolves after LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat. Soon after, he was waived by the Timberwolves.

The Boston Celtics were renamed the Boston Celtics on September 1, 2010. West signed with the Dallas Mavericks on December 12, 2011. The Mavericks waived him on October 29, 2012.

Following that, he played for the NBA D-Texas League’s Legends. He signed with Fujian Xunxing of China in October 2013.
