Did Audrey Shook adopt many kids?
Audrey Shook and her husband, Brent Shook adopted a six-year-old Chinese girl with down syndrome in 2015. The youngster was named Lucy and she spent virtually all her life in a Chinese orphanage for special needs children after being left in front of a police station by her biological mom when she was just four months old.
Together with Lucy, several other special needs children from China got reunited with their new families at George H.W. Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. Audrey Shook emotional welcomed her adoptive daughter Lucy when they first met, saying,
‘Hi! Hi! I’m a momma.”
Following this, Lucy affectionately addressed Audrey as “momma,” which facilitated the mother-daughter pair’s quick development of a bond. The Shooks, who already have five children together biologically, have always desired to adopt a child from China.
They had to delay their adoption plans for a few years, though, as they started a family together. After seeing a video of Lucy singing and playing, the Shook couple made the decision to adopt.
The Shook couple fell in love at first sight and decided to adopt Lucy right away. With the aid of Great Wall China Adoption, based in Austin, they were able to get in touch with Lucy.
A Texas adoption agency called Great Wall China Adoption works to place special needs Chinese orphans with adoptive families. Prior to deciding whether or not to allow the family to adopt the child, the agency first requests that the host family care for the orphans for a period of four weeks.
Shannon Philips who works at the Great Wall China Adoption shared,
“These are the kids that are unwanted, they are the kid’s nobody else wants, they’ve been sitting on lists for their entire life or sitting in an orphanage”.
When discussing her choice to adopt Lucy, Audrey remarked,
“I’ve always loved kids with special needs, especially kids with down syndrome.”
Additionally, Brent said to KHOU:
“We felt called to embrace somebody that needed a family and be their forever family. We don’t see it as we are going to help her, we see it as she’s going to help us with our lives.”
Adoptive parents of Lucy clutched the child in their arms, clearly overcome with emotion. Additionally, Brent and Audrey’s five biological children were also present at the airport to welcome their new sister into their life.
