In October of the 2017–2018 campaign, after he scored in both halves of a Champions League qualifying match against French team Nice, Tottenham Hotspur scouted him in the Netherlands. He scored three goals in an 8-0 League win over NAC Breda on November 18th. The Italian club Roma approached him in July 2018, but Donny declined. He switched to playing as an offensive midfielder for Ajax in the 2018–19 campaign. The group unexpectedly advanced to the 2018–2019 UEFA Champions League semifinals in addition to winning its first league championship in five years.
