Dorothy was one of five children born to her parents, and two of her sisters died as a result of polio problems.

Malone graduated from Ursuline Convent, Highland Park High School, and Hockaday School. She has a passion for dance since she was a child. As a child, she modeled for Neiman-Marcus.

Malone initially aspired to be a nurse. She did, however, enroll in the acting program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Maloney was a Southern Methodist University diver and swimmer. A RKO scout saw her performance in a drama she did while in college and offered her a Hollywood deal.

Dorothy Malone began taking acting/singing/dancing/diction courses after earning a Hollywood deal with RKO. On Broadway, she made her film debut in 1943 with an uncredited role in Gildersleeve.

She also appeared in the Frank Sinatra musicals Higher and Higher and Step Lively in minor roles.

After her two-year contract with RKO expired, Warner Bros. stepped in and offered her a minor part as a flirtatious book clerk in the film The Big Sleep. Despite the fact that the role was little, it helped her garner positive critical recognition, which helped her earn further film roles.

Malone’s contract was not extended by Warner Bros., and she returned to her family in Dallas. Dorothy Malone began working at an insurance company.

Dorothy Malone dyed her hair platinum blonde and discarded her ‘good girl’ image for the 1956 film Written on the Wind, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
