His name has become synonymous with controversy over the years.
According to his official website, he is a paternal blood relative of Frederick Douglass and Bishop Alexander Wayman. Umar’s claim has been repeatedly refuted by the former’s estate.
In 2016, Frederick’s true descendants issued the following statement:
“We can tell you unequivocally that he is not a descendant of Frederick Douglass.”Despite the controversies surrounding him and the Frederick estate, Umar appears to be optimistic about his latest project (a school for boys called The Frederick Douglass & Marcus Garvey RBG International Leadership Academy).
In terms of his family history, Umar was born on August 21, 1974, in North Central Philadelphia. He is the third of eleven children (six boys and five girls).
As contentious as his origins are, his educational credentials have sparked even more debate. Umar, 44, self-identifies as a Doctor of Clinical Psychology and a Certified School Psychologist. His credibility as a doctor, on the other hand, has been called into question since his meteoric rise to fame.
Michael Harriot of The Root wrote an article about Umar’s credentials in July 2017, insinuating that the latter’s education was a sham, only to apologize a few days later.
According to The Root’s journalist:
“I had no vendetta against Johnson, and I am no longer an apologist for Umar.”When you don’t conform to societal norms, it’s easier to make enemies than friends – an axiom that fits Umar’s personality.

Twitter is a platform for Umar to express himself, from anti-white rhetoric to musings on married life with his wife and children. On March 21, 2017, the Philadelphia native’s stern view on wife and marriage was on full display when he sent out a tweet.
And there was that one time, back on May 15, 2014, when he tweeted about his desire to have a wife. In a rare display of tenderness, he wrote:
“I believe the right wife will appear AFTER I complete my mission, which is to build the FDMG school first, followed by marriage.”Given his anti-white ideology, is it safe to assume that his “right wife” will not be white?
