She used to attend school while her hometown of Baidaposi was still in its pre-development stages. On June 20, 1958, she was born into a Santali Tribal household. The Draupadi family formerly resided in the Odisha village of Baidaposi in the Mayurbhanj district.

She had a lot of trouble with her studies when she first started attending school since she had to walk on roads full of pits and sharp stones to get there. She persisted in her academic pursuits. Being a member of a tribal family, no one had anticipated that she would undoubtedly finish her education because members of tribes don’t typically adhere to the educational system. Murmu, however, started a revolution by finishing her schooling. She graduated from Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, with a bachelor’s degree.

In the Panchayati Raj System, her father Biranchi Narayan Tudu held the positions of village head and farmer. The village’s mayor was also her grandfather. Draupadi Murmu lived the life of an assistant professor before embracing politics and winning elections. At Rajgangpur’s Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre, she worked as an assistant professor. From 1979 to 1983, she also worked as a junior assistant in Odisha’s irrigation department. In 1983, Draupadi made the decision to leave her teaching position and other government positions.

Her political career began in 1997. Murmu was elected to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat council in 1997. Her path to become a successful politician started at this point. Murmu was also chosen to serve as the Bhartiya Janata Party Scheduled Tribes Morcha’s national vice-president. She served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transport in Odisha from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002. She holds the position of Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004.

She prevailed in the Odisha Legislative Assembly elections in 2000 and continued to represent the Rairangpur Constituency as an MLA. Draupadi Murmu went on to serve in politics and later was elected governor of Jharkhand. Draupadi began her tenure as governor of Jharkhand on May 18, 2015, and she held the position till July 12, 2021.

According to reports, she is the first tribal woman from Odisha to hold the office of governor of an Indian state. And if she wins the 2022 presidential election, she will be the first Indian tribal woman to hold the office of president.

Shyam Charan Murmu, a bank officer, wed Draupadi Murmu. Currently, Mrs. Draupadi’s husband is deceased after passing away earlier in 2014. She has three children of her own as well. After marrying her spouse, Draupadi gave birth to two sons and one girl. But sadly, both of her boys passed away. Her second son, whose name is not publicly known, passed away in 2013, while her son Laxman Murmu passed away in 2009. However, her daughter Itishri Murmu is now helping to support her. Itishri Murmu is a married mother as well. Draupadi is the great-grandmother of Aadyashree, the young angel daughter of her daughter.

Currently, her daughter is employed at a bank. In a recent interview with a member of the media, Itishri said that her mother had always worked hard and honestly.

She revealed “Mirs. Draupadi, a kind woman, connects with everyone she meets and is like an open book. She has consistently worked honestly in every position she has held. She had previously received a Neelkanth Award for her good and honest job. Whatever task Draupadi gave her, she fulfilled it honestly and truthfully.

As her family’s financial situation was poor, Itishree said, “There was no one to support her mother in her difficult times. She had a lot of difficulties in her life before moving to Bhubaneswar for her schooling. When she finished her education, she left a motivating tale for the kids in her native town.

Additionally, Itisihree stated that Draupadi “never loved pompous life at all” and that “her lifestyle is extremely basic.”
