What is the Professional Career of Dries Mertens?

Mertens started his junior career from the local team, Stade Leuven in 1996. Anderlecht scouts saw Mertens and signed him to their junior academy in 1998. He spent 5 years at the club’s academy. The club discharged him in 2003 as he was too short and physically unable of competing at a professional level. Belgian Pro League club, Gent signed him in 2003. After spending 2 years in Gent’s academy, the club loaned him to the Belgian Third Division club, Endracht Aalst in 2005 for the 2005-06 season. Following the end of the 2005-06 season, Gent loaned Mertens to the Dutch club, AGOVV Apeldoorn.

The club made his move permanent in 2007. He was made the club’s new captain for the 2008-09 Eerste Divisie season. He was won the Golden Bull award for the most gifted player in the Eerste Divisie in 2008. Also, He spent three years at AGOVV. He scored 31 goals in 110 appearances in all competitions for the club. He transferred to Eredivisie team Utrecht in March 2009, where he had signed a 600,000 Euro deal with the club.

The club moved Mertens and Kevin Strootman to PSV Eindhoven for a total fee of 13 million euros in 2011. He made his competitive debut for PSV on 7 August in a 1-3 loss against AZ. He scored his debut goal in his debut game. Towards the back half of the 2011-12 season fixture against Heracles, he clashed with opponent’s goalie Remko Pasveer and lost a number of teeth. Mertens and Hamsik both scored a hat-trick in a 7-1 away win over Bologna on 4 February 2017. Napoli scoring 7 goals in a single game were the first time in the club’s history. He finished the 2016-17 season as the league’s second top goalscorer behind Edin Dzeko. He scored 109 goals in 280 appearances in all competitions since he joined the club until the end of the 2018-19 season.
