Chapman was born in Denver, Colorado, on February 2, 1953, to Wesley Duane Chapman (1930–2000), a welder (during Dog’s upbringing) who later became a bail bondsman (after Dog started) with Aaron Bail Bonds, and Barbara Darlene Chapman (née Cowell; 1934–1994), an Assemblies of God preacher (more specifically, a Sunday school teacher). Jolene Kaye Martinez (née Chapman; 1955–2016), Michael Chapman, and Paula Hammond (née Chapman) are his three siblings. On his father’s side, he is of German and English origin, while on his mother’s side, he is of English descent.

On August 22, 1979, Duane and Ann Tegnell exchanged wedding vows in Colorado. Duane was released from prison at the time. After serving two years in prison for first-degree murder, he was granted parole.

Chapman made international headlines on June 18, 2003, when he apprehended Andrew Luster, the heir to the Max Factor cosmetics fortune, who had fled the United States in the middle of his trial on allegations of drugging and raping a number of women. Luster was found guilty in his absence on 86 counts, including several rape accusations stemming from assaults in 1996, 1997, and 2000. Chapman was aided by his hunting crew, which included his son, Leland, and a friend, Tim Chapman (the latter having no relation). Luster was apprehended by the three bounty hunters in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they had been living under false identities.
