Duane Eddy’s Early Professional Career | Music, Songs, Albums
Duane Eddy discussed his occupation, playing lead on his guitar’s bass strings to produce a deep, reverberant “twangy” sound. He also recorded “Movin’ n’ Groovin'” in 1957, which was co-written by Eddy and Hazlewood.
In 1958, he signed a recording deal with Lester Sill and Lee Hazlewood to record in Phoenix’s Audio Recorders facility.
Sill and Hazlewood leased the tapes for all singles and albums to Philadelphia-based Jamie Records.
In early 1958, “Movin’ n’ Groovin'” peaked at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100, with an opening riff inspired by Chuck Berry’s “Brown Eyed Handsome Man.”
Similarly, he and his band members, who included Steve Douglas, saxophonist Jim Horn, and keyboardist Larry Knechtel, had a string of hit singles over the next few years.
According to Richie Unterberger, the singles include ‘Peter Gunn’, ‘Cannonball’, ‘Shazam’, and ‘Forty Miles of Bad Road’.
In 1959, he also released the album Has ‘Twangy’ Guitar Will Travel. In contrast to his fourth album, ‘Songs of Our Heritage’ (1960), which featured him playing acoustic guitar or banjo on each track, his biggest hit in 1960 was the theme song to the film Because They’re Young.
Duane secured a straight contract with Jamie Records, bypassing Sill and Hazlewood. As a result, he and the Rebels appeared frequently on The Dick Clark Show.
