Professional Life and Career

Edmlson joined S. Paulo FC in 1995 and won two Paulista Campeonato titles during his time there. He joined Olympique Lyonnais in France in 2000 at the same time as fellow countryman Caçapa, who was also a goalkeeper, and the two were instrumental in the club winning the League Cup in his first season. Juninho Pernambucano, meanwhile, moved to the Rhône-Alpes in the following off-season and frequently paired Edmlson in center midfield as they went on to win three consecutive Ligue 1 titles.

Edmlson joined FC Barcelona in July 2004 on a rumoured €10 million fee. On 19 September, he made his La Liga debut in a 1–1 away draw against Atlético Madrid, and he played only six games in his first season as the Catalans won the national championship; on 3 October, after coming on as a substitute for Samuel Eto’o during a home match against CD Numancia, he was forced to leave after only five minutes on the pitch, and he was sidelined for several months.

For the 2005–06 season, Edmlson recovered completely and was a key member of Frank Rijkaard’s team as they won the league and the UEFA Champions League. He played in nine games in the later competition, six of which were complete, including the first half of the final against Arsenal. Edmlson, 32, departed Barcelona after his contract was not renewed after a disappointing 2007–08 season, both individually and collectively. Edmlson signed a one-year contract with Villarreal CF on May 23, 2008.

He returned to his homeland after only a few months, signing a two-year contract with Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and scoring his first goal in the Copa Libertadores first round against Club Real Potos on January 29, 2009, just eight days after his arrival. After failing to play in the S. Paulo championship in 2010, Edmlson parted ways with Palmeiras and returned to Spain on 31 January, signing a five-month contract with struggling Real Zaragoza — he was already the bearer of an Italian passport at the time, therefore he did not count as a foreign player.

In addition, he continued to play consistently for the rest of the season as the Aragonese avoided relegation, and his contract was renewed for another year. Edmlson scored his first goal for Zaragoza on September 12, 2010, in a 3–5 home loss against Málaga CF. In June 2011, he returned to his homeland and joined Ceará Sporting Club after playing only 12 games in the club’s penultimate escape from relegation.

On July 18, 2000, Edmlson made his Brazil national team debut against Paraguay. He was chosen for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, and he played in six of the Seleço’s seven games, scoring his first (and only) international goal in a 5–2 group stage triumph over Costa Rica. Edmlson was originally selected for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but he was had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained in training prior to the competition.
