His family immigrated to the United States in February 1962, residing in Pasadena, California.

Before settling on “Van Halen,” the band pondered the moniker “Rat Salade,” after the Black Sabbath song of the same name. In 1976, Kiss bassist Rodney Bingenheimer was invited by band fan Rodney Bingenheimer. He was the guitarist in the band. They invite Gene Simmons to a Van Halen concert. Simmons was so impressed that he quickly recorded a Van Halen demo tape at the Village Recorder facilities in Los Angeles. Van Halen was discovered by the record in May 1977 at the Starwood. Hisself-titled debut album, released in 1978, was a commercial triumph.

Van Halen had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart with more than 80 million records sold globally as of 2007. Eddie Van Halen died of cancer on October 6, 2020. The singer had throat cancer and has been getting therapy for quite some time. Eddie left behind a wife and a son. His son expressed tribute to him on social media, writing,

“I can’t believe I’m writing this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, passed away this morning after a long and grueling struggle with cancer. He was the best parent a child could have. Every moment I’ve spent with him, both on and off stage, has been a blessing. My heart is broken, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully recover. Pop, you know how much I adore you.”

Eddie was “extremely serious” about leaving Van Halen at the time, Simmons recalled in a recent interview with Guitar World, adding, “He was so upset about how he and David Lee Roth were or weren’t getting along.” So, there were reports that Edward was leaving Van Halen and joining Kiss.

Charity

Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which offers musical instruments to pupils in low-income schools, received 75 guitars from his personal collection in 2017.
