Eiji Kawashima, who was born on March 20, 1983, in Yono, Saitama, Japan, started playing football in the Yononishi Junior High School and participated there from 1995 to 1997.

Kawashima played until 2000 before moving on to Urawa Higashi High School. Eiji Kawashima chose a professional football career over his university education, despite having great grades, and later started his professional career with Omiya Ardija.

Omiya Ardija (2001-2003) and Nagoya Grampus Eight (2004-2006)

Despite attending Urawa Higashi High School, Eiji was signed by Omiya Ardija in January 2001 as opposed to Urawa Red Diamonds. Kawashima was even sent by the team to practice with Parma F.C. in Italy’s Serie A.

Kawashima joined Nagoya Grampus Eight in 2004 and played as Seigo Narazaki’s backup until the veteran goalkeeper took over the starting position in 2005. Eiji Kawashima quit the team later, at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign.

Kawasaki Frontale (2007-2010)

Metz (2016- 2018)

On August 2, 2016, Kawashima signed a deal with Ligue 1 team Metz. At first, he acted as Thomas Dillon’s backup, but subsequently made his full-time debut for the team against Lens in the 2016–17 Coupe de France.

Strasbourg (2018-Present)

International Career

He served as Seigo Narazak’s backup goalkeeper in the 2010 FIFA World Cup team. Later, while starting in goal for a friendly match against England, he stopped two shots from Frank Lampard and one each from Wayne Rooney and a penalty kick, but the match ended in a loss owing to two own goals.
