Ernestine Shepherd was 56 years old when she went swimsuit shopping with her sister Velvet. It didn’t take her long to realize she needed to get in shape in order to rock that swimsuit look. That is where the Guinness World Record holder began her journey to become the world’s oldest female bodybuilder.

Ernestine is now known around the world as the world’s oldest female professional weightlifter and personal trainer.

Sister’s Death in the midst of Body Building

Sylvester Stallone’s performance in Rocky served as inspiration for the bodybuilder. She soon joined her sister, Velvet, at the gym in full force.

Ernestine and her sister began with aerobics before diving headfirst into bodybuilding. Velvet was the one who came up with the idea of entering their names into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest bodybuilding sisters.

Their mission was temporarily halted due to Velvet’s sudden illness, which resulted in her death from a brain aneurysm. Ernestine’s dying wish was for Velvet to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The bodybuilder was heartbroken and suffered from depression, which caused her to have panic attacks.

Ernestine, on the other hand, decided not to give in to the situation and instead to honor her sister’s final wish. She contacted Yohnnie Shambourger, the former Mr. Universe, and sought his advice. Ernestine worked her way up, and at the age of 71, she was named the world’s oldest female bodybuilder in 2010. Soon after learning of her honor, she traveled to Rome with Yohnnie Shambourger to receive her medal.

Diet Programs

When it comes to her diet, the Maryland native, who is not vegan, eats five to six small meals per day, spaced out by two to three hours. For breakfast, she eats oatmeal with a handful of walnuts and crushed pineapple. She has a baked white potato, chicken, and asparagus for lunch, followed by brown rice, turkey, and string beans. She later eats sweet potato, tuna, and spinach.

Ernestine also consumes approximately 120 grams of protein per day and considers water to be her primary beverage. She also consumes 1,700 calories per day, which are mostly made up of boiled egg whites, chicken, vegetables, and a liquid egg white drink. She goes to bed at 10 p.m. and drinks protein right before.
