Early Life

Ernie went to Oceanside High School in Oceanside, New York, where he followed his passions for football, basketball, and baseball. While at Oceanside, Ernie was a member of the Omega Gamma Delta Fraternity. Ernie, on the other hand, developed a passion for basketball and joined and played for Colgate University in 1945. Ernie declared his readiness to be drafted in the 1949 NDA conscription in 1949. The New York Knicks selected him in the third round of the 1949 NBA Draft. With the New York Knicks, he began his professional career as a guard/small forward. He spent six seasons with the Knicks, from 1956 to 1960. He appeared in a number of games with the knocks before retiring from the NBA in 1956. Ernie ten began his career as an Air Force physician, which sets him apart from other basketball players. He was stationed in Germany for a while. Ernie was also a chairman of the President’s Council in the Department of Physical Fitness and Sports. He served on the Olympic Sports Commission under President Gerald Ford, assisting in the creation of two significant pieces of sports legislation, Title IX and the 1976 Amateur Athletic Act. Ernie was also a senior vice president of Focus Partners LLC, a financial services corporation based in New York. He also worked as a consultant for the United States Golf and Fitness Association, which kept him busy when he retired from the NBA. Ernie also provided irregular commentary for a variety of sporting magazines.

Ernie married Colleen Kay Hutchins, Miss America 1952, and they had four children. Kiki Vandeweghe, his eldest son, is a well-known NBA All-Star who eventually went on to coach the New Jersey Nets. Tauna was a backstroke swimmer who won the US national title and also competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. Bruk Vandeweghe won a medal in beach volleyball at the 1994 Goodwill Games, while Heather Shannon, his youngest daughter, was the captain of the United States national women’s polo team and also a physician. Coco Vandeweghe, a world-renowned tennis professional, is Ernie’s grandson.
