Eugene’s Late Wife’s Illness is featured in the documentary “It Started As a Joke.”

Eugene Mirman’s wife was diagnosed with cancer for the first time in 2011. She beat the disease at the time with chemotherapy and other treatments. Unfortunately, her cancer relapsed in the latter half of the 2010s, and this time it metastasized in her bones, decreasing her chances of beating cancer.

The documentary was created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival. However, directors Julie Smith Clem and Ken Druckerman, who are close friends of Late Katie, decided to make a longer version of it as a farewell project for Eugene’s late wife.
