Albie Morkel was passed over for the 2011 World Cup in the Indian Subcontinent in favor of Faf Du Plessis, who made his ODI debut on January 18, 2011, against India and scored an undefeated 60 runs. As the number 6 batter, he made his Test debut for South Africa against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in 2012. He finished the game with 188 runs and was named Man of the Match. In the second inning, he scored a game-saving 110 runs in 466 minutes off 376 balls. After being found guilty of ball-tampering in a Test match against Pakistan in October 2013, he was later selected captain of the South African T20 team for three matches against New Zealand and was fined 50% of his match fee. In December 2013, as South Africa was on 450/7 and India was chasing 458 to win, he hit a test match-saving hundred with a score of 134 off 309 balls against India. On September 6, 2014, against Australia, he came within four runs of becoming the first batter in history to hit four consecutive ODI hundreds as he scored 126 from 109 balls despite South Africa losing by 62 runs. On August 24, 2017, Du Plessis replaced outgoing ODI skipper De Villiers as captain in all three formats. On the same day, he was also selected captain of the World XI team for the three T20 Internationals in Lahore, Pakistan. In the second ODI against Sri Lanka in March 2019, he scored his 5,000th run in ODI cricket. The following month, he was selected captain of South Africa’s team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. With 387 runs in nine games, he finished the tournament as South Africa’s top run-scorer. His highest Test score was 199 against Sri Lanka in December 2020 at Centurion. His maiden ODI century came in his 51st match against Australia in Harare, more than three years after that, while his greatest ODI total of 185 runs came on February 7, 2017, against Sri Lanka in Cape Town. After Gary Kirsten’s 188, he set the record for the second-highest ODI score by a South African. He also became the first South African to score hundreds in all three game types when he struck his first T20I century against the West Indies in January 2015.
