The accusations made against Baldwin were used by some on Twitter and Reddit as a warning to “NOT speak to police without a lawyer present. Ever,” penned @Pevei on Reddit.

Eliza Orlins, the public defender for New York City, had previously tweeted the same thing.

“Periodic reminder from your friendly career public defender: no matter who you are and no matter what you have done or NOT done: DO. NOT. TALK. TO. THE. COPS,” she wrote.

Baldwin is seen admitting to holding the gun in video footage captured on a bodycam after the shooting as he assists police with their investigations.

Baldwin didn’t need to speak with the police, according to a widely distributed New York Times article. You also do not.

Vox’s senior correspondent Marin Cogan talked about her experience speaking with the police following an incident. I’ve covered a small number (not many!) of criminal cases, and I’ve noticed this repeatedly. You believe you are assisting the police in learning the truth. They are developing evidence to use against you, she surmised.

After it was revealed that Baldwin is being charged, his lawyer Luke Nikas responded by telling Newsweek that there are plans to fight the charges.

“Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun—or anywhere on the movie set. He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win,” he said.

Jason Bowles and Todd J. Bullion, the attorneys for Gutierrez-Reed, also issued a statement defending their client. Hannah is, and has always been, very emotional and sad about this tragic accident, they said in a statement to Yahoo. Although she did not, however, kill someone accidentally. But these accusations are the result of a seriously flawed investigation and an incorrect assessment of all available information. We’re going to expose the whole story, and we think a jury will find Hannah innocent.
