Early Years and Family
Siller, one of George and Mae Siller’s seven children, was born in Staten Island, New York, in 1953. His mother died a year after his father, who died when he was 22 years old, in 1975. He was now responsible for looking after his younger siblings. Stephen Siller, the youngest of them all, was just eight years old.
Older brother of New York City Firefighter (FDNY) Stephen Siller, who died while rescuing the wounded from the 9/11 attack, Frank Siller is well-known. He established the Tunnel to Tower Foundation in memory and honor of his brother, and he currently serves as both the CEO and Chairman of the organization.
Beginning of Tunnel To Tower Foundation
On September 11, Frank and the other two Siller brothers were waiting for Squad 1 member Stephen to return from his night job at the FDNY in Brooklyn. When they witnessed the initial jet crash into the North Tower, they had intended to play golf.
By then, Stephen had already reversed his pickup and was en route to his fire station to gather his equipment before entering the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. When he arrived, the tunnel was unfortunately barred by security, but he quickly put on his gear and made his way to the South Tower through the tube.
Soon after the day was through, Frank got a message saying Stephen was one of the firefighters still unaccounted for.
Frank eventually suggested creating a foundation to remember what Stephen and others had done that day following the disaster. His family supported him, and as a result, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation—named for the feat Stephen accomplished that day—was established.
Frank’s Youngest Brother, Stephen Siller and his Wife
Stephen Siller and his Wife Stephen was George and Mae Siller’s youngest child when he was born in 1967. His older siblings raised him when his parents died when he was eight years old, and as a result, he grew up to join the heroic Squad 1 of the FDNY.
On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was only 34 years old, rushed into the tunnel. On that particular day, he had intended to play golf with his brothers, but in the middle of the round, he contacted his wife Sally to let her know he would soon be joining them. He left his wife and five children behind, nevertheless, and did not come back after the day.
Frank Siller and ‘Never Forget Walk’
Siller has planned group runs and walks to remember the sacrifices made by veteran families to keep Americans safe ever since the Tunnel To Tower Foundation was founded. In order to memorialize the 9/11 heroes, the charity launched the 5K Run & Walk NYC with Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s blessing.
With over 40,000 participants each year, it became the foundation’s trademark event and one of the top 5K races in the country. Additionally, he recently marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a 537-mile trip known as the “Never Forget Walk” in 2021.
His voyage began at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, continued through Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and ended in Manhattan, New York City. During this time, he landed in six states and visited with the families of the veterans who lost their lives in the terrorist assault.
He informed CBS News as he was traveling that he would be following Stephen’s path to the tunnel. I’ll be considering Stephen. I am aware of the distinction. I’m strolling. With his kit on, he ran. I’m going to the Freedom Tower to watch the Twin Towers on fire like he saw them.
But I’m trying to do something to respect my brother, he continued. And I believed I was capable of doing this. I’m glad I did it, too. Siller completed his 537-mile journey in 42 days when he arrived in Manhattan on September 11, 2021.
