Their cartel quickly became successful, supplying 80% of the cocaine in the world, and the market grew. Despite the final breakup of Jung and Lehder as business partners, it gave Jung the opportunity to collaborate with Pablo Escobar, the infamous drug lord and narco-terrorist.

After being discovered in possession of many pounds of cocaine, Jung was taken into custody, but he later escaped bail. He promptly went back to his smuggling operations, was caught, and received a 60-year prison term. After George Jung consented to give a witness statement against his old accomplice Lehder, his sentence was reduced to twenty years. He left jail in November 2014 and was freed.
