On February 22, 1930, George Younce was born as George Wilson Younce in Patterson, North Carolina. He was born as the youngest of his parents’ five children. Ruby Ham, Tom Younce, Ray Younce, and Brudge Younce are his siblings. He stated that his father had the greatest influence on his musical career.

In 1936, Younce and his family relocated to Lenoir, North Carolina. He first heard Southern Gospel music when he was 15 years old, in his hometown. During his adolescence, he joined his first quartet, the Spiritualaires. When his voice changed during adolescence, he moved to the bass portion. Younce worked for over a decade with some of the most well-known music ensembles, including Homeland Harmony Quartet, Florida Boys, and The Weatherfords. He traveled with the groups to various locations in the United States and abroad. Younce founded the Cathedral Quartet in 1963, together with lead vocalist Glen Payne, Danny Koker, and Bobby Clark. For 36 years, the music ensemble toured the world together.

Younce’s tireless work in the music industry earned him 14 Singing News Fan Awards for “Favorite Southern Gospel Bass” Singer. In addition, he was named a “Living Legend” of Gospel Music in 1988. Later that year, in 1998, he was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame at Dollywood. Younce released his first solo album the same year. He went on to record two more solo projects. Two of these were nominated for Dove Awards in the category of Southern Gospel Album of the Year.

Personal Existence

Clara Younce was the wife of singer George Younce. He married her on April 27, 1955, and they remained married until his death in 2005. The pair was married for nearly five decades, during which time they had five children.

They had four daughters, Lisa Younce, Gina Younce Eroskey, Tara Younce Aidala, and Dana Lynn Younce Wills, as well as one son, George Lane. By 2019, two of their daughters, Dana Lynn and Tara Younce, had died. Tara passed away in December of 2017 at the age of 42.

Death

the experienced vocalist, died in April 2005 at the age of 75. He was diagnosed with heart disease and kidney failure in the last few years of his life. He had been receiving dialysis for several years. On April 11, 2005, he died at Akron City Hospital in Ohio. His wife Clara, daughters Gina (Rick) Eroskey and Lisa (Ernie) Haase, and son George Lane Younce survive him.
