Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle were both past title contenders who Gerry defeated by “knockout” during the course of his career. Young’s cuts forced the fight to be interrupted. The WBC placed him first as a consequence, and he was eager to go on champion Larry Holmes.

Just 54 seconds into the first round of their fight in 1981, he used a blisteringly powerful strike to knock out former heavyweight champion Ken Norton. He succeeded in beating Lee Savold’s 1948 record for the fastest knockout during the main event at Madison Square Garden, thereby creating a new record.

After a protracted absence, Cooney resumed fighting in September 1984, defeating Phillip Brown in Anchorage, Alaska, in the fourth round. That year, he competed once more and prevailed, but personal problems prevented him from competing.

In 1987, Cooney lost a title battle against Michael Spinks, a former heavyweight and light heavyweight world champion.

In his professional career, Cooney has a record of 28 wins, 3 defeats, and 24 knockouts. He has never endured more than 12 or 15 rounds in any of his fights. He is listed at number 53 on The Ring’s list of the “100 Greatest Punchers of All Time.”

As a prominent member of J.A.B., the original boxing union, Cooney promoted championship bouts involving George Foreman, Roberto Durán, and Héctor Camacho. Cooney, on the other hand, mentors young fighters in the gym and opposes domestic violence. In June 2010, Cooney co-hosted the SIRIUS XM Radio program “Friday Night at the Fights.”

Cooney defeated Earlous Tripp for the Heavyweight Open title in 1976 after defeating Larry Derrick for the 160-pound Sub-Novice title in 1973.
